A Glimpse of Compassion: Reaching Out to the Forgotten
In the midst of our tireless mission work, there are moments that touch our souls and remind us of the profound impact of compassion. Such a moment recently unfolded when our founder, Rev. Terefe Tadesse, met a man on the streets during a mission trip. This encounter was a poignant reminder of the importance of our work and the pressing need to extend a helping hand to those who often go unnoticed.
A Chance Encounter:
During the last mission trip to France and Belgium, it was a weary evening and Rev. Terefe, fatigued from his efforts, took a moment to step outside. In the heart of the Calais city, he encountered a man seated on the street pavement.
With empathy in his heart, Rev. Terefe approached the man and struck up a conversation. He asked, his name, and where he came from? The distressed and hopeless man replied and said that he was from Sudan and his name was Husen. Husen, who had been marginalized and misunderstood, revealed his simple wish: “I want something to eat,” he said, “but not just any food. I want chips.”
Husen, like many others, is grappling with mental illness. He is one of the outcasts, facing challenges that often render them invisible to society. Husen’s plea, though seemingly small, held immense significance. It spoke of a yearning for understanding, compassion, and connection.
Rev. Terefe, sitting beside Husen, took his hand and offered a prayer. He beseeched the Holy Spirit to watch over all those who suffer from mental illness, hardship, and exile. His prayer encompassed not only the man before him but also the countless individuals who share a similar burden of mental distress, feeling unseen and unheard.
This encounter serves as a poignant reminder of the urgency and significance of our mission work. Love Gospel Mission International is dedicated to reaching out to those who need it most.
